About Behold
Cropping, gravity, closing and opening my eyes
The series began with a question in Mallorca, Spain. I developed an appreciation
for dry stone walls and made the first paintings of them there in 2003. I wondered
why I liked dry stone walls and painting them. Later I came home and started painting
with the answers.
Creating within a canvas, paper, or image many times larger than any desired result
allows abandoning intent. Paint a stone and the rest follow. (The main ingredient
of a dry stone wall is gravity.) Close my eyes, look away, or watch while painting.
It is after water or oil dry that the image is revealed or there to be found. Faith
replaces wondering what to do next. It is done when it was stopped. It is done when
it is done being done. It is there. There to be seen. Revealed. This has resulted
in my seeing what I would have never seen or known to paint. Behold.
